Members Present: Dr. Marion Sanford, Director of JFMC; Dr. Jose Sainz (Chair); Dr. Antonio Causarano (Secretary); Dr. Leo Lee; Dr. Melody Denhere (Absent); Dr. Xiaofeng Zhao.
- Jose introduced the newest member of the committee – Dr. Leo Lee. Marion stated that the two student representatives should be appointed by the next committee meeting.
- It was announced that the minutes will be approved at the next meeting.
- A brief history and review of the purpose of the JFMC FAC was provided.
- Marion gave an overview of the year-long Cultural Awareness Series events, especially highlighting the various speakers and performers who are coming to campus. This is the 23rd year of the implementation of this series. She also shared the upcoming programs with the 2016 Latino Identities Month Celebration (Sept 15 – Oct 15). It was announced that the keynote performance for the Asian Cultural Celebration, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30th, was canceled by the group.
- Marion reported that this is the fifth year of the RISE Peer Mentoring program. This year’s cohort includes 35 peer mentees (new students) and 28 mentors (upperclass students). The Meet & Greet was held on Tuesday, August 30th. Their first workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14th. The participants are a diverse and energetic group. They are anticipating another great year with the program.
- Also, budget and funding was also discussed.
- An update on staffing in the JFMC was provided. Marion shared that Dr. Wanda Wallace has started as the new James Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Civil Rights and Social Justice. She began her term on July 25th. The JFMC is in the final stages of hiring a new Associate Director. The anticipated start date for this position is Sept. 25th.
The Committee will have its next meeting 10/11/16 at 4:00 pm.
