Task Forces for Reallocation Study

Hello everyone,

I am emailing you to update you on the progress of the University Faculty Council in determining a process for electing the faculty members of the task forces for the reallocation study, which we were asked to do by President Hurley at the beginning of December.

The UFC has charged the UFOC to put out a call for nominations for an election of 20 faculty (associate level and above) to the two task forces (support and academic). Each task force will have fifteen members.  The President will assign eleven of the elected faculty members to the academic task force and four to the non-academic task force. The five not chosen by President Hurley will remain as alternates (if one of the others cannot serve or backs out).

President Hurley will then appoint four other members of the faculty to fill out the remainder of the academic task force.

Faculty can be nominated or can self-nominate. Individuals may indicate a preference for support, academic, or no preference in terms of the task forces, although there is a possibility they may not get their choice. Nominees should answer, in one hundred words or less, “What qualities, expertise and experience would you bring to the task force, if elected?” As usual, we will use the Condorcet method for voting.

The elected list of 20 should include at least two people each from COB and COE. If elected, faculty should be prepared to modify their other service commitments to make participation in this manageable, as service on the task forces will involve a significant amount of work.

Timeline:

At the moment, we anticipate that the consultant will make a few initial visits in late March or early April to work with the task forces. The task forces will work through the summer (perhaps every other week) although the bulk of work will take place in the fall of 2013. The process typically takes 9-12 months from start to finish, so some work may need to be done in the spring of 2014. President Hurley will provide course releases either for the fall 2013 or spring 2014.

You should be hearing from Deborah Zies and the UFOC by Monday. I’d like to thank the members of the UFC in helping me to complete this process.

Best,
Debra

How much flexibility is available for faculty who agree to serve on the reallocation committees? For instance, could someone who has already scheduled a research trip that covers part of the summer be part of the process, just missing meetings as needed?
