Speaking and Writing Intensive Committee – August 28, 2026

Action Items

Proposing the following deadlines for courses seeking a new SI/WI designation (see Rationale)

  • September 18, 2026 for Spring 2027 designations
  • November 20, 2026 for Summer 2027 designations
  • January 22, 2027 for Fall 2027 designations

Minutes

1. Greeting and welcoming new members, reporting on UFC website changes

2. Reports on the need to document in these meeting minutes that the committee allowed for urgent approval by the former Chair for an independent study course, STAT 492, after the instructor resubmitted the revised course syllabus. The committee members are aware that the secretary will add to the first meeting minutes of 2026-2027 the former Chair’s urgent approval of an independent study WI course.

3. Discussing WI/SI assessment, assignment requirements, and review steps: the courses that did not pass the WI assessment last semester will be removed from the WI designations in the CIM system. Several courses that were granted WI designations long ago were not integrated into the CIM. CIM will update to integrate these courses for their designation changes. The committee members agreed that the WI course removal did not meet the assessment. The Chair will execute the removal in CIM once the system is ready. No full paperwork resubmission is required.

4. Members discuss important proposal submission deadlines, objectives of the SIWI course goals, the review process, UFC meeting dates, and student adding and dropping periods.

5. Electing a Chair and Secretary & Welcoming self-nomination

6. Discussing Emergency SI Proposal: WGST Independent Study 485 & reviewing SI requirements and assessing processes

  • A graduating senior in Women and Gender Studies (WGST) needs an SI credit in the major
  • No SI-designated courses in the major were offered this semester
  • Reviewing and discussing the WGST 485 tentative course proposal

7. Discussing possible dates in the following months for meetings.

8. The chair will contact the UFC chair and the course registrar’s manager to notify the new chair and secretary, provide the names of members, and discuss tentative course proposal deadlines for courses seeking SI-WI designations for this academic year. Full academic-year deadlines will be posted on the SIWI website once confirmed (Ex officio members have website edit access).

9. The committee members are proposing the following deadlines for courses seeking a new SI/WI designation and propose that the UFC approve these designations at its next meeting.
• September 18, 2026 for Spring 2027 designations
• November 20, 2026 for Summer 2027 designations
