James Farmer Multicultural Committee Minutes 9 8 16

James Farmer Multicultural Center Faculty Advisory Committee Minutes September 8, 2016 4:00 pm Members Present:  Dr. Marion Sanford, Director of JFMC; Dr. Jose Sainz (Chair); Dr. Antonio Causarano (Secretary); Dr. Leo Lee; Dr. Melody Denhere (Absent); Dr. Xiaofeng Zhao. Jose introduced the newest member of the committee - Dr. Leo Lee. Marion stated that the two student representatives should be appointed by the next committee meeting. It was announced that the minutes will be approved at the next meeting. A brief history and review of the purpose of the JFMC FAC was provided. Marion gave an overview of the year-long Cultural Awareness Series events, especially highlighting the various speakers and performers who are coming to campus. February 24, 2016 James Farmer Multicultural Center Cultural Programming and Collaborations Report   Black History Month Celebration –February 2016 The successful implementation of the 2016 Black History Month Celebration involved the collaboration of the Planning Committee, the JFMC, BSA, and several other departments and student organizations on campus. In addition, a few of the programs involved local community organizations and agencies, such as Virginia Organizing.   The theme for the month was “Many Memories, One Voice”. Each program was designed to reflect the theme in one aspect or another.  The goal of the Black History Month Celebration was to honor, celebrate, and educate everyone about the contributions of African Americans to American history and culture.  The month-long celebration included a social justice discussion, lectures, film and discussion programs, cultural and musical events representative of the Black cultures, as well as four meals … [Read more...]

James Farmer Multicultural Center Cultural Programming and Collaborations Report

Jewish Cultural Celebration – November 2 - 13 This was the fifth annual Jewish Cultural Celebration co-sponsored by the Jewish Student Association and the JFMC.  The kick-off celebration was successful with over one hundred individuals attending the special cultural dinner in the University Center, fourth floor.  There are several other programs throughout this two-week celebration including a film and discussion event, a Shabbat dinner, and a Havdalah Ceremony, etc. The keynote speaker for this celebration is Rabbi Charles Feinberg, a Rabbi of 42 years and supporter of social action and social justice issues. Currently, he is the executive director of Interfaith Action for Human Rights, a nonprofit that educates Mid-Atlantic religious communities about human rights issues and does advocacy on the state level.   Native American Cultural Celebration – November 16 – November 20 The theme was “Moving with Courage: The Voice of Yesterday and Tomorrow.” This week-long … [Read more...]

Minutes of the Meeting of the James Farmer Multicultural Center Faculty Advisory Committee   February 24 2016   Present: Melody Denhere (Chair, CAS); Antonio Causarano (Secretary, COE); Marion Sanford (JFMC Director); Xiaofeng Zhao (COB); Jose Sainz (CAS)excused ; Davarien Sayles (Student Representative); Mariam Ansari (Student Representative). Apologies: Tracy Citeroni (CAS)   Director’s Report   Updates to the activities-Marion updated the Committee on the upcoming activities for the Spring 2016 semester. She reported on the remaining Black History Month (BHM) events, including the Great Lives event 2/25/16 highlighting Ethel Payne. She indicated there were over 500 individuals who attended the Step Show that past weekend.  The Black Student Association sponsored a Blood Drive, that in spite of the snow days that preceded it, still had over 35 donations.  Overall, Marion stated the BHM celebration was a success. James Farmer Multicultural Center Cultural Programming and Collaborations Report

Gender and Sexual Minorities and Allies (GSMA) Cultural Celebration 2015 – October 14 - 23 • The student organization, People for the Rights of Individuals of Sexual Minorities (PRISM) took the leadership in planning and coordinating the events for the campus community. The theme for this celebration was “We Will Rise.” The kick-off celebration took place on October 14, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. on Ball Circle. During this event, information was provided regarding GSMA programs, the PRISM club, and games were available for attendees. Other activities included educational presentations, a film screening, and a prom dance as the concluding event. The keynote program featured Chris Doucette, a well-established comedian who uses his talents to speak about current and topical events.
